Write What You Want to Read

My nephew Noah Collins is a singer/songwriter. Years ago, he told me the reason he started writing music was because he wanted to write songs he liked to listen to.

Many authors write books for the same reason. At the risk of sounding a bit narcissistic, I enjoy reading my own books, especially the fiction ones. By the time I finish writing the book, the characters have become my friends. They are real to me. Who doesn’t love visiting old friends every now and again? For me there’s a double reward because most of the novels I write are based on family history stories so these characters are real people — my family!

A few years ago, I was in a slump. I’d learned the rules of good writing through some editor friends. While learning the rules was extremely beneficial and improved my writing exponentially, it also cramped my style a bit. I couldn’t seem to relax and write without editing as I went.

My author friend, Marcia Lynn McClure suggested I write a novel just for me — as if no one else would read it. That’s when I wrote the short novel, Binding Ties. It’s one of my all-time favorites. No family characters. It’s modern, yet brings in the flavor of the South and the rich history that surrounds us wherever we go here. Ironically, it’s also a reader favorite as well.

What types of books do you enjoy reading? Have you ever considered writing something you’d love to read? Something just for you? As author, Toni Morrison, said: “If there’s a book you really want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.”
